Does Sporting Kansas City hold academy tryouts?

Children's Mercy Training Facility, Swope Soccer Village · Kansas City, Missouri · Checked September 7, 2026

NoTrial information

No open tryouts for the Sporting KC Academy, which trains U15 to U18 boys at Swope Soccer Village. The club says it invites players to trial based on its scouting network, through a form or direct email to staff, and that it only contacts players who receive an invite. Below that age, the Center of Excellence is an invite-only supplemental program, and the club's 18 Academy Affiliate clubs across eight states, including Sporting Blue Valley and Sporting Oklahoma, run their own open tryouts each year and feed the Academy pipeline.

How recruitment works

Application or Affiliate club recommendation leads to a trial invitation with the Academy at Swope Soccer Village. Academy itself is free once selected.

    Academy player recruitment form

The official self-nomination route for a trial. The club says applications are reviewed by the Talent Identification staff and only invited players are contacted, given the volume of interest.

Center of Excellence, ages 11 to 14

An invite-only supplemental training program for boys 13 and under, delivered by Sporting KC Academy coaches, that has produced at least one first team Homegrown signing. Entry is by club recommendation and observation, not open tryout.

    Academy Affiliate club open tryouts

Sporting KC's 18 Academy Affiliate clubs, including Sporting Blue Valley, Sporting Oklahoma and Sporting Kaw Valley, run their own open tryouts each summer. These are paid club teams, not the free MLS Academy, but they are the club's main talent pipeline.

    Scouted through the Affiliate network

Sporting KC holds the exclusive right under MLS rules to run youth development and scouting across Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, and Academy scouts attend Affiliate All-Star Experiences and Observation Days to identify players.

Where scouts watch
  • Kansas City metro area, Kansas and Missouri
  • Oklahoma, through Sporting Oklahoma
  • The 18-club Academy Affiliate network across eight Midwestern states
  • Sporting KC holds sole MLS rights to youth development and scouting across its Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma homegrown territory
If a scout calls
  1. Ask whether an opportunity is with the Sporting KC Academy itself or with an Academy Affiliate club. The Affiliates carry the badge but are separate, paid organisations.
  2. If your child is in the Center of Excellence, ask what the pathway to the full Academy actually looks like, since it is one feeder route among several.
  3. For Affiliate club tryouts, ask directly about the club's recent record of sending players into the Sporting KC Academy, since this varies a lot between the 18 clubs.
  4. Homegrown signing rights depend on Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma territory rules, so ask how a move would affect eligibility.
Watch out

What to check before you agree

Academy Affiliate clubs use the Sporting KC crest and colours, but their open tryouts are for paid club teams, not the free Academy.
"Regional Pool Player" and similar Affiliate programs are recommendation based, not open enrollment, even though they sound like a direct route in.
No reply to the Academy recruitment form is the normal outcome. The club says it only contacts invited players.
