Trial days are the step clubs let people sell. The other four are where it is decided.
- 01Play grassroots, in the catchment
Scouts watch junior league fixtures within the travel limit: one hour at U9 to U11, ninety minutes at U12 to U16. Live outside it and the registration cannot happen.
- 02Get seen, then watched
A scout notes a player, then comes back. Chelsea watches for four to six weeks before anything is said to a parent. You may never know it happened.
- 03Development centre or pre-academy
Some clubs run tiers below the academy: open ones you can book, invite-only ones above. This is where most academy players are actually found.
- 04Trial period
Six to eight weeks training with the age group, scored weekly. Keep the grassroots club going until the form is signed.
- 05Registration, one year at a time
U9 to U11 registrations last a year. Every spring the club decides again. Decline by the first Saturday in June if you want to move.
