What size football for my child? (UK, 2026)

Most UK children use a size 3 ball when small, size 4 from about 8, and size 5 from about 12 or 13. Here is the simple guide, and how to pick one.

Football size by age

This is typical guidance, not a rule. Clubs and leagues can differ, so check with your child's coach or league before you buy. The FA's youth formats are age-based, and the ball size follows the format: smaller balls for the youngest, size 5 for the full-size game. The FA sets youth formats by age group, so the club's own information is the best source.

Age (typical)Ball sizeNotes
Under 8 and youngerSize 3Light and small. Good for first touches.
8 to 11Size 4The usual size for 9v9 youth football.
12 and overSize 5Full-size ball, used in 11v11 youth and adult football.

Between sizes? A small or less confident child can stay one size down for a while. A bigger child at 11 may already train with a size 5. Ask the coach which ball the team uses, and buy that one.

Which ball to buy

For practice, a plain training ball is enough. Spend on a size that fits, not on a match-style design. We found two well-reviewed training balls that cover sizes 3, 4 and 5. Both are sold as one product with a size choice, so pick the size on the Amazon page and check it shows before you add to basket.

Questions parents ask

What size football for a 5 year old?

Size 3 is the usual choice for the youngest players, up to about age 7 or 8.

What size football for an 8, 9 or 10 year old?

Size 4 is the common size for about 8 to 11, and it is used in 9v9 youth football. Ask the club in case they differ.

When does a child move to a size 5 football?

Typically around 12 or 13, when they move to the full-size game. Some strong, tall players move earlier. Follow what the coach uses.

Can my child train with a bigger ball?

A size up can help touch and strength, but it is harder for young children. Match the ball to their age group unless the coach says otherwise.
