Does Newcastle United run academy trials?

Newcastle United Academy, Little Benton · Little Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne

NoStraight answer

No open trials, but Newcastle is one of the few clubs that publishes the rules on its own academy page: one hour's travel for ages 9 to 11, ninety minutes for Under-12 to Under-16, a defined trial period after which families are told the outcome, and a full appraisal for any player who is unsuccessful. The club also gives a named recruitment contact for questions about its scouting network and development centres. Since moving to a full-time training model it can recruit nationally from Under-15, which has changed who it competes with.

Where scouts watch
  • Newcastle and North Tyneside
  • Sunderland, Durham, Northumberland
  • National from Under-15 under the full-time model
  • EPPP limit: 1 hour travel U9 to U11, 90 minutes U12 to U16
If a scout calls
  1. Ask for the length of the trial period and the date you will hear. The club says both are specified.
  2. If it does not work out, ask for the appraisal. The club says it provides one.
  3. Check the travel rule to Little Benton. The club quotes it on its own page: one hour at 9 to 11, ninety minutes at 12 to 16.
  4. The academy is a mile from the first-team training ground. Ask about the pathway to the Under-21s, which the club has deliberately made younger.
Girls

WSL 2 academy.

Girls' academies are licensed by the FA, not the Premier League. How the girls' pathway works.

Newcastle United Women's U21s play in the PGA Northern Division. North East ETCs, including those run by county FAs and Durham, are the usual step before.

Watch out

Three things parents get sold.

Newcastle's academy has said openly that under financial rules, selling graduates is now part of the business. Ask what that means for retention.
Foundation advanced coaching is a community programme. The academy page is the one that matters.
Third-party sites list personal email addresses for staff. The official recruitment address is on the club page.
The weekly

One email a week for football parents who want the real picture.
