My child was scouted. What happens next?
The usual steps from a scout’s first word to registration, what is normal at each one, what to ask, and the red flags. For football and soccer parents.
Usually more watching first, then an invitation to train with the age group for a few weeks, then a decision. Weeks of silence are normal and do not always mean no. Check the scout with the club, using contact details from the club’s own website. A real academy never charges, and clubs are not allowed to offer money or gifts to get your child to sign. If your child is registered, you have seven days to cancel.

What usually happens
Every club runs its own process, so the details and timings vary. This is the common shape in England.
- 01
First contact
A scout speaks to you or your child’s coach after a match, or the club contacts your grassroots club. Take their name and the club’s details. Do not agree to anything yet.
- 02
More watching
Scouts often watch two or three more times, sometimes without telling you. This can take weeks. Silence here is normal. Keep your child playing as usual.
- 03
Invitation to train
If the club is interested, your child trains with the age group for a trial period. It is free and usually lasts weeks, not one day. Arsenal, for example, describes roughly eight weeks.
- 04
The decision
The club offers registration, asks for more time, or says no for now. Ask how and when you will hear before the trial starts.
- 05
Registration
You fill in a form with proof of address and date of birth. Your child joins the age group set by their age on 31 August. You have seven days to cancel by contacting the Premier League. Use that week to ask questions.
Travel rules in England: under-9 to under-11 players must live within one hour of the training ground, under-12 to under-16 within 90 minutes. If you live further away, the trial cannot end in registration. Each club page shows the rule and the club’s own routes.
Five questions to ask the scout
Write the answers down. They help you check the scout with the club and plan the weeks ahead.
- What is your name, and who is the academy recruitment manager?
- Which age group would my child train with?
- What happens next, and roughly when will we hear?
- How long would a trial last, and when and where is training?
- Do we live close enough for the travel-time rule?
When to stop and check
If any of these happen, contact the club directly using details from its own website before you go further.
They ask for money
A real academy never charges for a trial or a place. If you are paying, it is not the academy.
They offer money or gifts
Premier League rules ban clubs from offering cash or other benefits, including paying travel costs, to get a child to register.
An “agent” approaches a young child
Under Premier League rules, an intermediary (the new name for an agent) may not approach a player before 1 January in the year of their 16th birthday.
They promise a place
Nobody can promise an academy place before a trial. Clubs decide after watching a child train.
They want an answer today
A real club gives you time. Pressure to decide on the spot is a warning sign.
Not sure what an offer is? Check it here. If you are worried about an approach to a child already at an academy, the Premier League says to contact that club’s head of safeguarding.
What to tell your child
Keep it small. “A club liked how you played. They might come and watch again.” Children play more freely when a scout is just another person on the touchline.
Keep everything normal: the same team, the same training and the same friends. The club wants to see the player they saw.
If a trial starts, read our guide on preparing for a football trial. If it ends with a no, our guide for the weeks after release can help.
After-scouting questions
What happens after a football scout approaches my child?
Usually more watching. Scouts often watch a player two or three more times before the club invites them to train. If the club is interested, your child trains with the age group for a trial period, then the club decides whether to offer registration.
How long after being scouted do you hear back?
It varies from days to several weeks. Weeks of silence are common and do not always mean no. If you have heard nothing after a few weeks, one polite message to the contact you were given is fine.
How do I know the scout is real?
Ask for their name and the name of the academy recruitment manager, then contact the club using details from the club’s own website. The Premier League says you should always confirm a scout’s identity with the club. A real scout never asks for money.
How long is an academy trial?
Usually weeks, not one day. Arsenal, for example, describes roughly eight weeks before a registration decision. Each club sets its own process, so ask at the start how long it lasts and how you will hear.
Does an academy trial cost money?
No. Real academy trials are free. If you are asked to pay, it is a development centre, camp or private company, not the academy. Use our checker to see what an offer really is.
What happens if the club wants to register my child?
You complete a registration form with proof of address and date of birth. Your child joins the age group set by their age on 31 August. The Premier League says that if you choose to cancel, you must contact it within seven days.
Should my child keep playing for their grassroots team?
Keep playing as normal while the club is watching and during the trial. If your child registers with an academy, ask the club what it allows, because clubs set rules about playing for other teams.
What if the trial ends with a no?
It is common, and it is not a final judgement on your child. Academies recruit in every age group. Ask for one or two things to work on, keep playing, and read our guide for parents after release.
