Football coaching for kids: what is worth paying for?

1-to-1 coaching, small groups, holiday camps, apps and online courses, compared honestly. UK and US prices. Also called private soccer lessons.

The short answer

Start free: more games with friends and a good grassroots club. Pay for 1-to-1 coaching only for a specific goal, usually from about age 9, in short blocks. In the UK a one-hour 1-to-1 session typically costs about £30 to £70. In the US, private soccer lessons average about $40 to $100 an hour. Whatever you choose, check safeguarding first.

1-to-1 coaching (private lessons)

UKAbout £30 to £70 an hour
USAbout $40 to $100 an hour
Good for
One clear technical goal: weak foot, first touch, finishing, goalkeeping. Lots of touches with feedback.
Weak at
No opponents and no teammates, so few real decisions. Easy to overspend.
When
Usually from about 9, for a specific goal, in blocks of four to six sessions.

Small-group sessions

UKAbout £20 to £35 per child
USAbout $35 to $65 per child
Good for
Cheaper than 1-to-1, with some game situations and other players.
Weak at
Less individual attention.
When
Often better value than 1-to-1 for under-12s.

Holiday camps

UKOften £15 to £25 a day
USVaries widely by camp
Good for
Fun, lots of play, childcare in the holidays.
Weak at
Rarely changes a player’s level on its own. Club-badged camps are not academy trials.
When
Any age, for enjoyment. Do not pay extra for “scouts attending”.

Apps and games

UKFree to about a monthly subscription
USFree to about a monthly subscription
Good for
Short, regular practice. Drill apps for technique, decision games for football IQ.
Weak at
They do not replace playing with other children. Check what data an app collects about your child.
When
As a small extra, a few minutes at a time.

Online courses

UKFree (for parents) to paid
USFree (for parents) to paid
Good for
For you: free governing-body courses teach how youth football is coached. Paid player courses vary a lot.
Weak at
Paid video courses for children are hard to judge and easy to abandon.
When
Parent courses at any age, especially if you help at your child’s team.
By age

What to spend on at each age

  1. 5–8

    Spend nothing extra

A local club and lots of play. Camps for fun if you need holiday cover. Private coaching is rarely needed.

  2. 9–12

    Small, targeted extras

Small-group sessions or a short 1-to-1 block for one clear goal. Keep most of the time for team football and free play. This is the key age for football IQ.

  3. 13–16

    Specific and measurable

Position-specific work, goalkeeping, strength and speed with a qualified coach. Ask what will be different after six sessions.

Checks and red flags

England: the FA requires an Enhanced DBS check with a Children’s Barred List check for anyone 16 or over in a potentially unsupervised role with under-18s. US: state associations following US Soccer’s Safe Soccer Framework require adults to complete a background check and SafeSport training.

Ask to see the safeguarding check (in England a DBS check, which is a criminal record check; in the US a background check and SafeSport safeguarding training), first aid and the coaching qualification.
Ask what one session includes and what your child should be able to do after a block of sessions.
“Scouts will be watching” or “guaranteed trial” as a reason to pay. Academies recruit by scouting matches, not by selling places.
Long up-front contracts or pressure to book a whole season before a first session.
A club badge on a camp or programme does not make it the club’s academy. Check an offer before you pay.
Questions parents ask

Coaching, camps and courses questions

Is 1-to-1 football coaching worth it for my child?

It can be, for a specific technical goal like the weak foot, first touch or goalkeeping, usually from about age 9. It is less useful for game understanding, because there are no teammates or opponents. Book a block of four to six sessions with one clear goal, then review.

How much does 1-to-1 football coaching cost?

In the UK a one-hour 1-to-1 session typically costs about £30 to £70, depending on the coach’s qualifications, experience and location. Small-group sessions are often £20 to £35 per child. In the US, private soccer lessons average about $40 to $100 an hour, and small groups about $35 to $65 per child.

How much do private soccer lessons cost in the US?

A private one-hour youth soccer lesson in the US averages about $40 to $100. Small-group lessons average about $35 to $65 per player per hour. Prices rise with the coach’s licence and experience and in big cities.

Are football holiday camps worth the money?

For fun, friendships and holiday childcare, often yes. Many UK camps cost about £15 to £25 a day. Do not expect a camp to change your child’s level or lead to an academy. A camp that sells “scouts attending” as a reason to pay is a sales message, not a pathway.

What age should a child start private football coaching?

Most children do not need it before about 9. Under 9, playing lots of small games with friends builds more. After 9, short blocks with a clear goal can help, alongside regular team football.

Are there online football courses for parents?

Yes, and some are free. In England, the FA’s EE Playmaker is a free online entry-level course, about five hours, for anyone aged 14 or over who wants to help in grassroots football, including parents. In the US, US Soccer has offered a free 20-minute online Introduction to Grassroots Coaching module.

Do football training apps work?

They help as a small, regular extra. Drill apps can build technique if your child actually does the drills. Decision games can build football IQ because they give many decisions in a few minutes. None of them replace playing with other children.

Will paid coaching help my child get into an academy?

Not directly. Academy scouts watch real matches, usually grassroots and school football. Paid coaching can improve skills, but no private coach or camp can sell an academy place. If someone implies they can, treat it as a warning sign.

What safety checks should a private football coach have?

In England, the FA requires anyone aged 16 or over in a potentially unsupervised role with under-18s to hold an Enhanced DBS check (a criminal record check) with a Children’s Barred List check, issued within the last three years. In the US, state associations following US Soccer’s Safe Soccer Framework require adults to complete a background check and SafeSport training (safeguarding training for adults in sport) before working with youth players. Ask to see proof.

What should I ask before booking a coach or camp?

Ask about safeguarding checks, qualifications, first aid, the ratio of coaches to children, what one session will include, and what your child should be able to do after a block of sessions. A good coach answers all of these easily.
